A/Prof Matthew Gray started his career at Macquarie University in 1988 enrolling in a Bachelor of Economics/Bachelor of Laws and graduated eight years later from The University of Newcastle with a Bachelor of Medicine. After completing his FRACGP in 2000 he began consulting from the Schwarz Family Practice eventually forming a special interest in Travel Medicine and now the COVID-19 pandemic. Matthew is a passionate advocate for General Practice and primary care and he is currently the Chairman of the South Western Sydney Primary Health Network. He was appointed as a member of the South Western Sydney Local Health District Board by the NSW Minister for Health in 2013 and is now the Deputy Chair. Matthew is involved in the education of future doctors (including two of his own sons) to maintain and improve the quality of doctors in South West Sydney and he is a governance expert for local hospitals. On 26 January 2022, A/Prof Gray was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia recognising his outstanding long term and ongoing contribution to community health.
