Dr Nicky Abitz holds a research Masters degree in Psychology and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology both from the University of Sydney (AH Martin Scholarship). She is registered as a Clinical Psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and is a member of the Australian Clinical Psychologist Association (ACPA). Nicky completed her doctoral thesis at the University of Sydney in 2012, researching the intergenerational transmission of anxiety and aggression from parents to their children.
In addition to her private therapy work at Maternal Connections, Nicky works part-time as a consultant Clinical Psychologist at Karitane, a community based mother craft clinic.
Nicky’s therapeutic orientation is primarily psychodynamic, informed by attachment theory, infant development research, trauma theory, intersubjectivity and relational psychoanalytic theory; however, she also integrates cognitive behavioural and mindfulness based approaches into her work where appropriate.
Her approach to therapy is based on careful, respectful, and nonjudgmental listening. This approach to therapy is best suited to people who are interested in using therapy as an opportunity to move towards a better state of well being and health, while at the same time learning more about themselves and how they relate to others and their environment.
Nicky supports clients to develop a shared understanding of their internal emotional experience, their sense of self, and the ways in which they relate to others and their environment.
